Understanding Material Thermal Limits: Tg vs HDT

Why confusing Glass Transition (Tg) with Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) leads to failed functional prints.

Tg

Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)

The exact molecular temperature range where the polymer's amorphous chains transition from a rigid glassy state to a flexible rubbery state. Above Tg, unreinforced plastics lose structural stiffness.

Practical Maker Impact: PLA has a Tg of ~55°C. Leave a PLA print inside a closed vehicle in summer (cabin temp 60°C+), and it will deform under its own weight even without external force!
HDT

Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT)

The temperature at which a standard test bar bends by 0.25 mm under a mechanical load (tested at 0.45 MPa or 1.80 MPa per ISO 75). For fiber-reinforced composites (like PA-CF), HDT is often much higher than Tg.

Practical Maker Impact: PA-CF (Nylon Carbon Fiber) has a Tg of ~85°C, but its carbon fiber matrix gives it an HDT of 190°C! It can handle hot automotive engine brackets where unreinforced plastics sag.
